Sinope 3 November 1855 |
Sinope remains inhabited today, centred around the military fort shown here on 3 November 1855 by William Simpson (1823-1899). The watercolour was completed in 1857, but the image it portrays is of the town shortly before a major Russian naval victory over the Turks on 30 November 1855 which served to draw Britain and France into the Crimean War. Unfortunately, the fort's military use over several centuries and the built-up nature of the immediate surroundings has made it virtually impossible to carry out any meaningful level of archaeology on the site, leaving large gaps in the town's history, especially prior to the coming of the Romans in the region. |
